One of the first things Gary Andersen did when he took over as Utah State’s football coach was move Curtis Marsh from running back to cornerback.
It turned out to be one of his best decisions, as Marsh became an All-WAC performer and is projected by many as an upcoming pick in the Christian Louboutin Sandals next month.
With that success, Andersen did the same thing this spring, moving rising junior Dontel Watkins from receiver to compete for Marsh’s vacated spot at defensive back.
Initially, Watkins projected as a safety. But as spring practices have progressed, Watkins is strictly a corner.
“It’s been an adjustment,” Watkins said. “I’m trying to get used to staying low. It’s different because I’m used to moving forward at the start of plays, and now I have to get used to moving backwards.”
Andersen, who also doubles as the defensive coordinator, made the switch for a number of reasons. Watkins, at 6-foot-3, has the size Andersen covets in his defensive backs. He’s one of the fastest players on the team, and the coaching staff hopes that his experience as a wideout benefits him when covering other receivers.
“Dontel has it all in place to be successful,” Andersen said. “He’s got unusual size for his position and excellent speed. The key is for Dontel to buy into the defensive system. If he does, then he has a chance to be a great cornerback.”
